Deadly force was often the only choice in the past. So it was decided to provide a less deadly technique for officers to use and the taser evolved as a standard tool for most police today. However,.... (you had to know there would be a however).
Recently we saw taser use in a student forum, 'don't tase me bro', where although no officer's lives were in jeopardy, the student had an expectation and the reality of being hit by a taser.
Do we accept taser use for punishment, rather than a replacement for deadly force? If not, how can we curtail use of a taser to its original purpose?
Pass a law requiring review of each and every use of a taser similar to use of a weapon.
Of late, there is a troubling trend of citizens and even elected officials stating that when a police officer asks you to do something, yours is not to question why, but to comply. This is a troubling development. If an officer asks me to jump off a cliff, must I comply? We have a right to free speech and the right to question orders--unlike the Germans.
Search 'taser' on YouTube and you will find multiple examples of taser usage when a citizen asks a question or does not immediately comply even when not under arrest. This is troubling. That use of a taser is no better than use of a cattle prod at the stock yards.
