Our Public School education especially for the minorities in the Omaha Metro area has caused the Unicameral to act. To read the OPS annual reports, the growing drop out rates and the dropping proficiency scores don't happen. What is missing? What is happening in our schools and what has changed?
My great aunt Lil was 80+ years old and was going in for surgery. She was placed in a two bed room while tests were administered. Her roommate was bedridden and required help from time to time which my aunt was happy to give. But she informed her doctor that because she would be unable to help her roommate after surgery, she would need a private room. When told there were none available, my aunt used the "hammer". She told the doctor, "Then I'll just have to go to a different hospital" and amazingly a private room was found.
But trusting public or private entities to do what is best for us and our children can result in disappointment. Often in the case of a monopoly supplier, there is no hammer. So if a child's school turns out lower and lower scores for reading and math, can we say "I'll just have to send my child to a different school"? Some wealthy couples use the equity of their homes or an early pension on their child's education but the ones who need it most, are denied a choice.
